When planning a trip to Doha, one of the first questions that might pop into your mind is how to effectively navigate the city. Having experienced various cities across the Gulf and Middle East, I often anticipate a lack of robust public transport. However, Doha proved to be a delightful exception. My recent visit revealed a surprisingly efficient and affordable public transport system, making it remarkably simple to explore the city. From the sleek Doha Metro to the comprehensive Doha Bus network and readily available taxis, getting around Doha as a tourist was far easier than I had imagined. This guide aims to share my insights and tips to help you make the most of your travel experience in Qatar's capital.
### The Doha Metro: Your Gateway to the City
The Doha Metro is an absolute game-changer for tourists. It boasts an extensive network, connecting Hamad International Airport in the south to Lusail in the north, and extending inland to areas like Aspire Park and Education City. For most tourists, the Red Line, which runs along the coast, and the Gold Line, serving key areas like the museums and souqs, will be your primary routes.
It's important to distinguish between the Metro and the Tram. While the tram system operates in areas like Lusail, its stations are integrated within the metro stations. This means you can seamlessly switch between the two systems.
#### Doha Metro and Tram Maps
To help you plan your journeys, I highly recommend saving the official Doha Metro and Tram maps to your phone. Having these readily accessible will be invaluable during your trip.

#### Navigating the Doha Metro System
The metro stations themselves are impressive – spacious, immaculately clean, and incredibly user-friendly. During my visit, I found all stations equipped with essential amenities such as toilets and prayer areas, and most also housed small convenience stores. Even if you're typically intimidated by public transport in new cities, Doha's Metro is designed to be approachable. Staff are readily available to assist, and the overall atmosphere in the stations is calm and pleasant. The trains are generally punctual, though they can get busy during peak hours. However, the crowding is nowhere near the intensity of systems like the London Underground.
The stations are not only clean but also wonderfully cool, offering a welcome respite from the Qatari heat.
#### Doha Metro Carriage Types
When boarding the Metro, you'll notice three distinct types of carriages:
* Gold Class: This is the premium option, akin to first class, and is reserved exclusively for Gold members.
* Standard Class: This carriage is accessible to all passengers.
* Family Class: This carriage is designated for families, couples, and women. Solo male travellers or groups of men without accompanying females or children are not permitted to use this carriage.
As a solo female traveller, I felt perfectly safe throughout Doha, including on the Metro. However, I personally preferred the Family Class carriages. I found the seating arrangements more comfortable, and the general ambiance more relaxed.
#### Doha Metro Opening Times
It's crucial to be aware of the Metro's operating hours, especially considering that Friday is part of the weekend in Qatar. On Fridays, the Metro typically does not commence operations until 2:00 PM. From Saturday to Thursday, services begin at 6:00 AM. The Metro runs until midnight on Thursday and Friday nights, and until 11:00 PM from Saturday to Wednesday.
#### The Doha Metro Card
To use both the Metro and Doha buses, you'll need a 'Dohaa Metro Card'. These cards can be purchased at any Metro station for an initial cost of 10 QAR, after which you'll need to add credit to it. The staff at the stations are incredibly helpful, so don't hesitate to ask for assistance if you encounter any issues with the ticketing machines.
#### Paying on the Doha Tram
The primary difference between using the Metro and the Tram lies in the fare payment system. While the tram stations are integrated into the Metro network and the carriages are distinct, the payment method varies slightly. For the tram, you simply tap your travel card upon boarding. The Metro, on the other hand, has tap barriers before you access the escalators leading to the platforms.
#### Cost of Doha Metro Travel
One of the most significant advantages of the Doha Metro is its affordability. Each journey costs a mere 2 QAR (approximately £0.44 at the time of writing), with a daily cap of 6 QAR. This means you can explore the city extensively for a very reasonable price.
#### Metro from Doha Airport
A major convenience is the Metro's direct connection to Hamad International Airport (HIA). The Red Line serves T1 at the airport, offering an efficient and budget-friendly way to reach Doha city centre. This is particularly beneficial if your accommodation is located near areas like Souq Waqif, West Bay, or Lusail.
### The Doha Bus System
While the Metro covers a significant portion of the city, there might be instances where a bus is your best option. I only used the bus once during my stay, primarily because the Metro was so comprehensive. However, for destinations not directly served by the Metro, such as The Pearl, the bus network is invaluable. Legtaifiya station is the closest Metro stop to The Pearl, and from there, a bus connection is readily available. Google Maps proved to be an excellent tool for identifying the correct bus routes.
Look out for the distinctive turquoise-coloured buses.
#### Using Doha Buses
As mentioned, Google Maps is your best friend for navigating the bus routes. When boarding, it's always wise to confirm with the driver that the bus is heading to your intended destination. You can pay your fare by tapping your Metro card on the reader as you board.
#### Doha Hop-On Hop-Off Bus
For tourists with limited time or those who prefer a more guided approach to sightseeing, the Doha Hop-On Hop-Off bus is an excellent option. This service covers all major Doha attractions, including Souq Waqif, the National Museum of Qatar, and Katara Cultural Village. A 24-hour ticket allows you to explore these sites at your own pace, and an audio guide provides informative commentary.
### Taxis in Doha: Convenience and Value
I found taxis in Doha to be a convenient and inexpensive mode of transport, especially when compared to other major cities in the Gulf. You can hail a taxi directly from the street, particularly in tourist areas like Souq Waqif, or book one using the Karwa app. It's worth noting that while many drivers may approach you outside stations or malls, it's wise to be cautious. I encountered a few drivers who only accepted cash, which made me wary about pricing and meter usage. For this reason, I highly recommend using the Karwa app or ensuring you hail a turquoise Karwa taxi from the designated queues. These taxis are easily identifiable and drivers are generally more professional.
#### Best Taxi Apps in Doha
The Karwa app is highly recommended. It allows for card payments, and the fares are consistently accurate, either matching the app's estimate or the meter reading. While I couldn't link my UK bank card to the app, I had no issues paying with my card directly. Be aware that the cheapest "white taxis" might not be officially affiliated with Karwa and may only accept cash. Always opt for the turquoise Karwa taxis for a guaranteed card payment option and a generally more comfortable ride.
#### Taxi Costs in Doha
The fares are very reasonable. Short journeys of 10-15 minutes typically cost around 2 QAR, while longer journeys of about 30 minutes are in the region of 5-6 QAR. This represents excellent value for a modern metropolis.

### Doha Dhow Boats: A Unique Experience
For a more unique way to experience Doha, consider a Dhow Boat trip. You can embark on these traditional wooden boats from various points along the Corniche, including near the Museum of Islamic Art. You can opt for a round trip or arrange to be dropped off in West Bay.
### Getting Around Qatar
While Doha offers excellent public transport, travelling to other cities and towns within Qatar might present more limited options. If you plan to visit rural areas or desert camps, it's advisable to check with your accommodation regarding transportation arrangements or potential pick-up services from Doha.
### Karwa: The Backbone of Doha Transport
Karwa, also known as Mowasalat, is the primary entity responsible for taxis and much of the public transport system in Doha. Their extensive network ensures you can reach most parts of the city with ease.
In conclusion, navigating Doha as a tourist is a remarkably straightforward and enjoyable experience thanks to its well-developed public transport infrastructure. Whether you choose the Metro, the buses, or the taxis, you'll find getting around the city both efficient and budget-friendly. I hope this guide proves helpful for your upcoming trip to Doha!
