A Journey Through Time: Train-In to Lochalsh

Step back in time and embrace a truly unique mode of transport by opting for the Train-In experience. This journey takes you aboard one of North America's last flag stop railways, offering a nostalgic and authentic Canadian experience. Your train adventure can commence from several key locations: * White River, Ontario: A popular starting point, especially for those travelling from the west. * Sudbury, Ontario: Ideal for travellers coming from the southeast, including the Greater Toronto Area. * Missanabie, Ontario: A convenient option for those who prefer to drive closer to the railway line. The Canadian Pacific Railway's (CPR) distinctive "Budd" car services the CPR line connecting Sudbury and White River. This historic service operates on a specific schedule: * Eastbound (from White River): Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. * Westbound (from Sudbury): Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Please note: The Budd car does not operate on Mondays. Your destination is the "Lochalsh" stop, a dedicated flag stop that puts you right at the doorstep of your wilderness adventure. The Adventurous Road: Drive-In to Lochalsh

For those who prefer to chart their own course by road, the Drive-In option offers a sense of independence and allows you to experience the changing landscapes of Northern Ontario firsthand. Your journey will likely take you through the French Canadian lumber town of Dubreuilville, Ontario, a gateway to the rugged beauty of the region. Important Note: Standard GPS and Google Maps will not accurately guide you to our remote locations. We provide detailed, personalised directions to ensure you reach your destination without any issues. These directions will be provided upon booking as part of our comprehensive pre-trip checklist. Your driving route will depend on your chosen lodge: * Camp Lochalsh Guests: You can drive directly to Camp Lochalsh. The final stretch involves navigating gravel roads, passing by historic gold mines, and traversing the last 6 miles of a somewhat rough "two-track" road. A vehicle with some additional clearance is recommended for this part of the journey, although we can also arrange a boat transfer from the "narrows" if needed. * Loch Island Lodge & Outpost Guests: Your route will involve driving along a private, well-maintained 20-mile gravel logging road through the Chapleau Crown Game Preserve. This road will lead you to the "narrows" of Wabatongushi Lake. From the "narrows," a scenic 7-mile boat ride will transport you to Loch Island Lodge or your designated outpost. We recommend reviewing the lodging and dining options available along your driving route. Towns such as Sault Ste. Marie (Michigan and Ontario), Wawa (the closest lodging option to us), and White River offer convenient places to rest and refuel.
